Mothering Sunday (2): Blessing of Flowers and Simnel Cake

The posting of a blessing for daffodils on Mother’s Day created some discussion and comment on Facebook and Twitter. I am grateful to everyone who sent in alternatives. Many thanks to Fr David Chislett who sent the following which he composed when a parish priest in Australia. I especially like the references to Our Lady and the addition of a blessing for Simnel Cake. The biblical reference to the lilies of the field in the blessing of flowers is especially lovely.  I wouldn’t, myself, want to replace the proper Collect of the Sunday but this is clearly for a Children’s Mass.

Various liturgical purists have derided any attempt to mark this ‘secular’ festival which I cannot agree with. Like Harvest and Remembrance, this is a great opportunity for mission. The church has always popular devotions to its liturgical life.

AN ALTERNATIVE OPENING PRAYER FOR A CHILDREN’S MOTHERING SUNDAY MASS

Priest:

Let us pray.

God our Father,

on this special day we thank you for our mothers and for all their loving care.

Help us to show them how grateful we are by our gifts,

our words and our actions.

We thank you for Mary, the Mother of Jesus who prays for us.

We thank you for our Mother the Church,

who supports us as we travel through this life to our heavenly home.

We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

All: Amen.

The simnel cake and flowers are blessed after the Post-Communion Prayer (and notices) and before the blessing of the people:

THE BLESSING OF SIMNEL CAKE

Priest:

Heavenly Father,

we ask you to bless this simnel cake

that it may be a sign to us

of the feeding, love and care

that we have received from our earthly mothers through whom you gave us life;

from Holy Mother Church through whom we are reborn and nurtured in Christ;

and from Our Lady Mary, who prays for us with a mother’s love.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

THE BLESSING OF FLOWERS

Priest:

Heavenly Father, your Son Jesus admired the lilies of the field and taught us to imitate them by trusting in your love. Bless these flowers. Accept them as a sweet fragrance, and fill the hearts of those who receive them with your love. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
